This weekend's lessons: 1) I am patient. It is good for something. 2) My ethernet card is Ass. Very much so. No one cares enough about it to have updated the drivers at all in the past four years. Consequently it works in neither Mandrake nor Windows XP. I'll be buying a new one shortly. 3) My computer doesn't like my internal CD ROM drive that much. It's okay, but nothing special, you see. On the other hand, my computer loves my new CD RW drive. "Why do you use this inferiour, piddling CD ROM drive?" it asks me. "Can't you see the true glory of my RW self? Why do you betray me so?" Right. 4) It is good to have friends. They will search (albeit fruitlessly) for drivers for your pathetic ethernet card for you. They will accidentally type in "freshmeat.com" so as that you will be very grateful that somehow people haven't snagged that as a porn site. You'll be amused. They will then finally gently inform you that yes, your ethernet card is a piece of junk, and you'd best give up on it. Then they'll reformat your computer for you because you really had enough of this all from reformatting yesterday. *sigh* It was much appreciated. So now I'm running XP and I've got my drive partitioned in half. Not sure if I should install Mandrake again, or possibly try another distro. Should first see if I can get ethernet working, then see if I can figure out what my soundcard is for sure, then see if I can find drivers. I knew this would be a bit of a project, but I rather thought the weekend would be enough. Prolly would have been if not for the fact that I seem to have no luck with getting to any stores while there open. This is largely aided by the fact that we're Fredonia and we have in total, about two useful stores. *shrug* Hopefully I'll have ethernet working by the end of today. Then I can get back to obsessively blogging, IRCing, and otherwise wasting my life. Right. *crosses her fingers*
